Smile Train is a global charity with a singular focus. Children born with a cleft palette in many developed nations are able to obtain routine surgery and live an otherwise healthy, normal, social accepted life. However, in some parts of the developing world, a cleft palette can be a brutal social stigma and surgery may be financially impossible. This is purely an economic problem – not a medical one. Cleft surgery has been successful for decades, but for a family living off less than $2 per day could never dream of affording it for their child.
